This map shows the population growth in Arlington specifically between 2000 and 2020. Like in the 20th century, most of the population increase is centered around the metro stations. This indicates that Arlington’s population continues to grow even after a century of urban expansion. The maps also emphasize the importance of the metro as a transportation method and how it has continued to shape the Arlington community in the 21st century. Arlington keeps growing and changing over the years. Arlington’s history is one of growth, change, and immigration. From the early Indian Nations that settled the area to the modern Afghan refugees who have made Arlington their home, this is a place where people come for a fresh start. This immigration is largely driven by the county’s proximity to the nation’s capital, as many Federal jobs—both in D.C. and Arlington—are major sources of employment for local residents. Being near the capital also encourages other businesses to establish themselves in the county, such as Amazon, whose new headquarters moved there in 2018. As long as businesses see opportunity, they will invest in Arlington, which will only foster more growth in the future.
