Living History: Historical Military Camp Cooking

October 15 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

AHS President, Peter Vaselopulos (a Civil War re-enactor) will spotlight military food during the Civil War. Captain James M. Sanderson, a Federal officer from New York, wrote the groundbreaking cookbook, “Campfires and Camp Cooking: Culinary Hints for the Soldier,” to help educate newly minted “Cook Majors” and to improve the quality of food provided to soldiers. Learn about the outsized impact he had on the quality and safety of food prepared in military camps (including Arlington) and on the battlefield. Try some Civil War-era recipes. Find out how bad they were or be surprised at how good!
