DESCRIPTION:Join Daniel Gessel as he discusses the making of This is How We Say Thank You: 9/11 in Arlington\, his Eagle Scout project for AHS. Presented in a director’s commentary format\, the film will be shown with pauses throughout\, giving Gessel the opportunity to discuss the inspiration for the project\, how he selected those he interviewed\, memorable moments from filming\, and the stories that didn’t make it onto the screen. Reflecting on the project as we approach 9/11’s 25th anniversary\, he’ll also share what he learned about Arlington’s response to 9/11 while documenting one of the county’s most defining moments.

DESCRIPTION:On September 14\, 1956\, the Arlington Historical Society was formed by 88 Arlingtonians who wanted to learn more about local history.  Join AHS as we celebrate our 70th Anniversary by talking with past AHS Presidents about their experience\, inspiration\, and challenges. They’ll also talk about how the world of public history has changed and what that means for how we work to bring our diverse past to you. Current President\, Peter Vaselopulos\, will be our moderator. \nPast AHS presidents include: \n\nGeorge Dodge: president from 2006-2009\nCathy Bonneville Hix: president from 2018-2023\n\nGeorge Dodge is multi-generation Arlingtonian who is a lawyer specializing in senior care and estate planning. \nCathy Bonnevill Hix is also a multi-generational Arlingtonian who is a retired social studies teacher at Swanson Middle School. SUMMARY:The Legend of Dead Man's Hollow
DESCRIPTION:Local histories identify two nests of vice and corruption in Arlington during the early years of the 20th century: Rosslyn at the foot of the Aqueduct Bridge\, and Jackson City on the County side of the Long Bridge. Both areas were marked by drinking\, gambling\, sex workers\, political corruption\, and murder – murder so frequent that corpses were found nearly every week in Rosslyn’s Dead Man’s Hollow and Jackson City’s Hell’s Bottom. As the story goes\, it would take crusading Commonwealth’s Attorney Crandall Mackey’s closure of these dens of iniquity for Arlington take off as a desirable location for suburban development – and residents who would come to relish a deliciously scandalous past as much as they enjoy a more prosperous and peaceful present. \nPlease join local historian M. A. Schaffner for an examination of contemporary news reports of the actual crimes associated with Dead Man’s Hollow\, a side trip into Jackson City\, a look at Dead Man’s Hollow today\, and a glance at a common feature of the suburbs Mackey allegedly paved the way for. \nAbout Our Speaker: M. A. Schaffner\nMichael A. Schaffner lives with spouse and pug in a crumbling tenant farmer’s cottage on land that once belonged to the Glebe estate. When not calling plumbers they write history\, poetry\, and fiction with rather more enthusiasm than formerly engendered by position classification decisions\, benefit-cost analyses\, and Congressional budget submissions.
