DESCRIPTION:Step into the moment Arlington helped shape the nation’s capital. In 1791\, surveyors under President George Washington mapped a 100-square-mile federal district along the Potomac River\, placing forty sandstone boundary stones; some of which still stand in Arlington today. Learn about the people who surveyed and mapped this land. \nThe Arlington Historical Museum is commemorating 250+ years of local history. This exhibit is upstairs on the 2nd floor of the museum. \nThe Museum is open Saturdays 10-4 PM and Sundays 1-4 PM. \nIt’s FREE!

Through photographs\, artifacts\, and firsthand accounts\, the exhibit highlights the firefighters\, emergency personnel\, and community members who responded in the critical minutes and hours following the attack and honors the courage\, coordination\, and service that defined Arlington’s response.

SUMMARY:Why is Arlington's Oldest Building a Microcosm of American History?
DESCRIPTION:The Ball-Sellers House\, located in the Glencarlyn neighborhood\, is not only the county’s oldest surviving house but also encapsulates the entire history of Arlington. In many ways it is also a reflection of America’s transition from a former colony to the modern era. Arlington Historical Society‘s Chair of the Ball-Sellers House Annette Benbow will trace the changes the house has undergone over the years as its owners responded to new challenges and innovations. The Ball-Sellers House was built  by John Ball and his family ca. 1750 and remained  in use until it was donated to AHS by Marian Sellers in 1975.  It is open for free guided tours every Saturday (1-4 PM) from April through October. You can visit the house on October 31\, before we button it up for the winter. It is located at 5620 3rd Street\, South. \nAnnette Benbow has been running the Ball-Sellers House for the Arlington Historical Society since 2012 and has built on the research of her predecessors to add more meaning and context to this historic treasure. She has given talks on Arlington historical topics to a wide variety of Arlington audiences. She retired in 2020 after 35 years of service in the Central Intelligence Agency where she was a political and counterintelligence analyst and then managed inspections in the Office of the Inspector General. \nREGISTRATION RECOMMENDED: First-come\, first-served seating.
