On this day in Arlington history: October 15, 1966, the National Historic Preservation Act was enacted to preserve historical and archaeological sites in the US. The act created the National Register of Historic Places, which is maintained by the National Park Service, and it is the government’s official list of more than 80,000 properties deemed worthy of preservation.

Both AHS properties, the Hume School and the Ball-Sellers House, are on the list. Arlington has 66 total sites on the Register from Al’s Motors (3910 Wilson Boulevard) to the Earle Micajah Winslow House (2333 North Vernon Street).
