In its location on the border between North and South, at a key point in the Potomac route to the West, it has been a meeting place for many of the personalities and events which shaped the life of the region, state, and nation. It has been and continues to be the site of America’s “first time” achievements in science, government, and the arts.
Through more than 380 pictures, drawings, and maps which the authors have selected, with their extensive chapter notes and captions, this book brings to life Arlington’s people in their work and play, in war and peace, in good times and bad. It is the historical portrait of a county which has been on the leading edge of change in Northern Virginia, and as such, it is important both as a record of the past and an interpretation of the county’s heritage. The portrait includes a special view of the military community, which, since the 1860s, has been an important factor in the county’s history, and a glimpse of the Arlington National Cemetery.
