Description

Arlington National Cemetery (Images of America) by George Dodge

Written by former AHS President, George Dodge, this book illustrates the evolution of this cemetery from a potter’s field during the Civil War to the prestigious military cemetery in the country.  A foreword by Kim B. Holien, the last historian at Fort Myer–also in Arlington where those who guard are stationed–offers a unique perspective on the grounds and the men and women who protect it. Many books have been published about Arlington National Cemetery, but no other by local Arlington historians.

Arlington National Cemetery contains such significant monuments and sites as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Rough Rider Monument, the mast of the USS Maine, and Victims of the Terrorist Attack on the Pentagon, Space Shuttle Challenger, and Freedman’s Village. Today not only can one visit the graves of Supreme Court justices including Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, George Washington Parke Custis, James Parks, Medgar Evers, and President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, but one can also see the burial places of generals and admirals, Medal of Honor recipients, doctors and nurses, land and space explorers, inventors, and soldiers.
