Book: Glebe Houses of Colonial Virginia

$35.00

Category: Books
  • Description

Description

In Colonial Virginia with its established church, every parish was required by law to provide its minister with a glebe, a farm or plantation, and a glebe house as part of his recompense. There were numerous glebe houses in Colonial Virginia and they were substantial, well-built dwellings, fine examples of the mid-sized plantation house. With disestablishment of the church following the American Revolution, all glebe houses passed into private hands and only a few survive today. This study of the glebe system and the stories of the remaining glebe houses provide intriguing glimpses into social, religious, and economic life of Colonial Virginia.
The book describes in detail the parish glebe house that survives just off North Glebe Road in Arlington.
Co-author Willard Webb was a Virginian who received his education at the College of William and Mary and George Washington University. For the last ten years of his federal career he was head of the Joint History Office. He was a  member of the Arlington Historical Society and wrote several articles for the Arlington Historical Magazine on local history.
