Description

“In This Time of Extreme Danger: Northern Virginia in the American Revolution” by Michael Cecere

We’re taught a lot about revolutionary activities in Boston, Philadelphia, and southern Virginia, but residents of Northern Virginia also played an instrumental role in the American Revolution.  Arlington County was then part of Fairfax County. Fairfax County passed the “resolves” in support of Boston when martial law was imposed on Massachusetts in 1774 and landowners in what is now Arlington signed it. Fairfax county was the first to form an independent militia in September 1774 and residents of what is now Arlington County were a part of that first military opposition to England. You’ll also read about the Northern Virginians who are more familiar to you who had a very big role in the founding of our country such as George Washington and George Mason, to name a few.

This book highlights the role of revolutionaries throughout Northern Virginia through first-hand accounts and letters from the people who were there.  Maps and a guide to historical sites in Northern Virginia help you explore more on your own.
