General Tips and Information Resources
If you’ve reached this page, you are probably interested in learning about or researching a specific aspect of Arlington history.
AHS does not maintain a research library or large collections of archival materials besides artifacts. But each of the four hyperlinks below will lead you to sources of information that can be found either on the web or in local repositories, including those run by Arlington County government.
“Your County” contains historically-relevant links to Arlington County government websites.
“Your Neighborhood” contains links to neighborhood organization websites, many of which contain information about the origin and development of their respective neighborhoods. While we attempt to keep these listings up to date, you may not see your neighborhood listed; that might be because we’ve overlooked it, or because there is no known neighborhood organization that maintains a website. If you haven’t already done so, try entering the neighborhood name in your search engine and see what turns up.
“Your Property” contains tips on how to research the history of houses in Arlington as well as descriptions of and links to many useful sources of information, including county government websites. Most of the same sources can be used if you are researching the history of a commercial property or a specific street.
“Your Family” contains descriptions of and links to sources of information for those engaged in genealogical research generally and for researching past residents of Arlington.
“Something Else” contains listings of Arlington County churches, schools, parks, and waterways, many of which are hyperlinked to their respective websites. It is not a comprehensive list! We hope to add to it in the future. We also hope to add similar lists of other facilities such as follows: cemeteries, apartment buildings, fire stations, or others.
If you’ve explored these links and still haven’t found what you’re looking for, then send an inquiry to: info@arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org. We’ll do our best to help!
