Dedication Ceremony

The Arlington Historical Society and the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington will be unveiling the first of a series of “Stumbling Stones.” These bronze markers commemorate the lives of the enslaved people who helped build our county (and our country).

Nimrod Burke

Nimrod Burke (circa 1836–1914) was a Black soldier, scout, and patriot who fought for the United States Army during the Civil War. Born in Prince William County Virginia, Burke escaped to Ohio, where he built a life as a free man. He worked as a handyman under Marietta, Ohio, attorney and abolitionist Melvin Clarke.

Eagle Scout Service Project

Tyler Harry, a Boy Scout with Arlington’s Troop 164, wanted his Eagle Scout Service project to be historic. As a result, he submitted a proposal in November 2024 to organize the design, construction, and installation of two display cases for the Arlington Historical Society’s Museum. Tyler coordinated the project with the museum’s Collection Manager, Bethany Baker. She said the timing could not have been better since the museum is renovating.

Aircraft Warning Service

On this day in Arlington history: December 3, 1943, the “Arlington Sun” newspaper reported that 22 students graduated from the aircraft recognition school conducted by the Arlington observation post of the Aircraft Warning Service (AWS). Their accomplishment was celebrated with a certificate and a banquet at the Army-Navy Country Club. The class had 11 women and 11 men.
