On October 12, 1945, The Arlington Sun reported that the Marcey brothers had sold the Arlington County Dairy in “one of the largest business property deals in many years in Arlington.” According to the paper, “The sale price was not revealed, but was believed to run into six figures.” The newspaper said that “the Arlington Dairy has been in business since 1925, being owned by Julius, Harvey, Curtis and Eva Marcey, members of one of the oldest families in the county.”
The new owners are Prosise and Associates. Alan Prosise, in announcing the deal, said, “The dairy will be operated under the same name and with its present employees, maintaining a high standard of dairy products. The building and plant at Wilson Boulevard and Danville Street are being renovated, and the public will be invited to inspect the premises when work is completed about January 1” (1946). The Sun said Mr. Prosise has been prominent in Arlington business affairs for many years. He is treasurer of the Arlington Trust Company, while two of the associates are owners of the Arlington Asphalt Company.”
This was a sign of the times. Family-owned dairy farms, like Marcy’s Arlington County Dairy, were selling to high bidders, and the land was a valuable commodity. The county had been growing since the First World War. The Second World War only moved the county further from its rural roots.
